🚔 Looking back at the 1985 MOVE bombing
Tuesday was the 40th anniversary of the MOVE bombing, when the Philadelphia Police Department dropped explosives from a helicopter in the Cobbs Creek neighborhood of West Philly, killing 11 people and leaving over 60 homes destroyed and about 250 people homeless.
City Council declared May 13 MOVE DAY as a day of remembrance.
The incident brought an end to a shootout between cops and MOVE, a Black liberation organization that had been headquartered in the neighborhood for several years. Cops had obtained warrants to arrest four MOVE members after a slew of complaints from neighbors in that span. Philly Daily took a look back at the event and its aftermath to commemorate the anniversary.
Managing Editor Anthony SanFilippo — who was an 11-year-old West Philly resident living nine blocks from the bombing — also reflected on his memories after four decades in a reported essay.
